Women's Soccer Ready To Welcome Les Rouges To MCAC Soccer
Its been more than a decade since Manitoba's Francophone University, Universite de St-Boniface, stepped on a women's soccer pitch. This Saturday afternoon, the newest MCAC program prepares to kickoff at Memorial Park in St Vital and standing opposite Les Rouges to welcome them to the competition, CMU is hungry for a win.
Results were disheartening for the maturing Blazers in Week 1 of the young season. CMU took the lead on two occasions versus Providence last Saturday, only to see the Pilots bounce back on the counterattack, scoring equalizers only moments after the Blazers had taken a 1-0 and 2-1 lead. Speed and fitness appeared to be big factors for the Pilots in the final 45 minutes of the match, as the home team scored twice to send CMU away empty-handed.
Sunday's home debut against the defending 2015 Champions, Red River Rebels, saw the Blazers again unable to produce a goal and scoring chances were largely in favour of the Rebels. First-year goalkeeper Lydia Balsillie did all she could to keep her team in the match, but pace and endurance pushed Red River to a 2-0 victory.
With three points largely in the minds of the squad as they enter Week 2, CMU hopes to get themselves on the front foot early and re-establish some conifence into their play. The Blazers are coming off a 2015 season that saw the young team increase their point production to it's highest level in history, score the most goals they have in a season and with the majority of the same players returning to the 2016 roster, expectations for the new season are sky high.
The Blazers open their weekend on Saturday at 1PM versus USB at Memorial Park and travel west to Brandon to tackle the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at 1PM. CMU travels to Thunder Bay, September 23rd for matches against the Thunder Bay Chill U18 girls September 24th and 25th.
