Men's Volleyball Is Ready To Take On All Challengers In Toronto This Weekend

With five preseason wins under their belt from the MCAC preseason tournament hosted last weekend at Red River College, Men's Volleyball takes their perfect record to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Conference this weekend and the 2016 Seneca Sting Challenge.

CMU took convincing wins over USB, Providence, Red River, ACC and University of Winnipeg to capture their first tournament win in the MCAC and to make themselves the early favourites in their home province. "We were expecting to have a very strong team this season, but we weren't sure how the others would stack up," said Men's Volleyball Assistant Coach, Josh Ewert, "we had good matches with everyone, it just seemed that we have really improved in our ability to close out games and that will help us alot this season."

Tomorrow, the Blazers will fly to Toronto for the Sting Challenge and meet the hosts in an exhibition game on Thursday night before beginning their tournament on Friday afternoon against the Niagara Knights. Rounding out the competition in Pool A are the Durham Lords, Sheridan Bruins and the OCAA's 2016 Silver Medalists, Mohawk Moutaineers.

"This is obviously a tough tournament for us to win, with some of the CCAA's top teams there, but we are certainly focused on finishing in the top half of our group and showing the OCAA teams that we can compete with Ontario's very best programs", Ewert added.

Along with the host Seneca Sting, the team to beat in the the 2016 Challenge is likely the Fanshawe Falcons. The Falcons captured the 2016 OCAA Gold Medal and won bronze at the 2016 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championships.

"I'd like to see us rise to the challenge of playing at a slightly higher level, where teams make less mistakes," said head coach Don Dulder, "I feel that our lineup is better than we were last year and we should place better than in the past."

The Men's Volleyball team returns home on Sunday to prepare for their MCAC Home Opener, October 22nd against the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen.
