Women's Volleyball Signs Sanford Collegiate Left Side

Lydawn McGarry of Sanford Collegiate has signed her letter of intent to play Women's Volleyball for CMU beginning in the 2017-18 MCAC season. Despite being somewhat undersized at 5'6, McGarry is an explosive and technically sound player who head coach Evelyn Kampen has high expectations for in her first season of university volleyball.

"Lydawn is a very high-energy athlete," said Kampen, "she possess an aggressive mindset and has strong technical skills. What she lacks in her height she makes up for with her huge vertical and defensive capabilities."

As team captain, McGarry led the Sanford Sabres to a Manitoba High School 'AAA' Provincial berth by capturing the Zone 3 Championships in her Grade 12 season and was selected as her team's Most Valuable Player. The Rural Municipality recognized McGarry as a nominee for the RM of McDonald Athletic and Sport Leadership Award.

A multi-sport athlete with her high school, McGarry was also selected Most Valuable Player of the Sanford Varsity Girls Basketball team and was awarded Sanford Collegiate's Female Athlete of the Year in 2017.

McGarry plays club volleyball with the Manitoba Ice 18u's. Despite a seventh-place finish in the Manitoba Club Provincial Championships, McGarry and Ice entered the 2017 Canadian Nationals in Tier 1 and won Division 3.

CMU Women's Volleyball opens their 2017-18 preseason schedule in Edmonton on September 28th at Concordia University when the Blazers challenge the ACAC's Keyano Huskies, Augustana Vikings and the host Concordia Thunder. The first regular season action for the Blazers in 2017-18 is a rematch of the 2017 MCAC Women's Volleyball Championship when CMU travels to Otterburne to renew acquaintances with the Providence Pilots on October 27th.
