Marijka Yaschyshyn: October's CMU Blazers Women's Athlete Of The Month

Congratulations to Marijka Yaschyshyn of Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Blazers Women's Female Athlete of the Month for October.

It was a step forward for the women's soccer program in 2017. After finishing fifth in the conference in 2016 and missing the Conference Championships, a third-place finish in a very competitive 2017 field, was reason for celebration and optimism for 2018. A key to the Blazers success was the solid, consistent defending and leadership of the third-year co-captain.

The Blazers leading goal scorer in 2016, Yaschyshyn was asked to take on a more defensive role this season and anchored the backline to a league's lowest number of goals conceded: six over ten matches. The product of Bonivital Soccer Club helped CMU to four clean sheets during the month of October including a 6-0 victory over ACC Cougars on October 1st, and scoreless draws against USB Rouges on October 7th, Brandon Bobcats on October 15th and a critical point taken from a 0-0 scoreline against Red River Rebels on October 22nd that helped clinch a playoff spot for the Blazers.

Despite an early exit from the 2017 MCAC Championships last weekend, a 2-1 loss to USB, Yaschyshyn earned her first MCAC All-Conference recognition in Women's Soccer for her outstanding play.

The next challenge for Yaschyshyn and her teammates will come in the new year when the squad comes indoors to tackle the MCAC in Women's Futsal. The Blazers kickoff the 2018 Copa de la Paz Regular Season on January 13th at USB.
