Robbie Friesen: October's CMU Blazers Men's Athlete Of The Month

Congratulations to Robbie Friesen of Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Blazers Men's Athlete of the Month for October.

Friesen featured as a goalkeeper for the Blazers in his first and second seasons in the MCAC, but completed a very successful move outside the 18-yard box this season. In fact, the native of Grimsby, Ontario lined up as a striker, midfielder and defender during the month of October in the CMU starting eleven and scored a momentum-shifting goal on October 7th as part of a 2-2 draw with USB Rouges, who would eventually go on to win the 2017 MCAC Championship.

The Blazers enjoyed a solid month of October after the opening month of the season rendered them a mere five points. As part of a record-breaking number of matches tied, Friesen and CMU drew games against ACC Cougars, Brandon Bobcats, Providence Pilots and USB Rouges during the month of October and capped the regular season with a critical 6-1 win over the Red River Rebels to vault themselves into the MCAC Championships on an offensive high.

Friesen continued his relentless running into the Conference Semifinals against the #1 ranked Providence Pilots. Playing as a fullback in the match, the top offensive team in the MCAC found little opportunity to create chances to score goals. The match took 120 minutes (90 minutes plus 30 minutes of extra time) to find a goal with the Pilots emerging victorious through a 3-1 win in penalty kicks.

The next action for Friesen and the Blazers will happen indoors when CMU meets the MSA Prospects at WSF North on Friday night at 8:30pm. The Blazers begin their 2017 MCAC Futsal Regular Season on January 13th at USB against les Rouges.
