Women's Volleyball Surges Into Clash With Les Rouges

The defending MCAC Women's Volleyball Champions are back flying high after back to back home courts wins over the ACC Cougars last weekend. CMU opened the 2017-18 Regular Season with shaky performances against the Providence Pilots and Red River Rebels, costing the Blazers two losses.

With a record now even at 2 wins and 2 losses, Women's Volleyball enters an important home and away challenge with the USB Rouges, Friday night in St-Boniface and Saturday night in the Loewen Athletic Centre; matches that could make or break their first half record.

CMU counted on rookie opposite Jess Edel in their wins over the ACC Cougars last weekend who came up with strong attacking performances in both matches. The product of the Morris Mavericks recorded 12 kills on Friday and 11 on Saturday to lead her team in scoring.

On the other end of the spectum and opposite Edel in the front row, fifth year captain Rachel Oswald was instrumental in back to back wins over the Cougars, scoring 12 kills on Saturday afternoon and adding a team-high 5 aces from the service line.

"Things are clicking for us right now," said Oswald, a product of Winnipeg's Kildonan East High School, "It is all about being emotionally and mentally steady for us. We saw that with our improved serving last weekend and in our attacking as well. We are putting the ball in play consistently and giving ourselves a chance to win points."

In the back row, third year Winnipeg Wesmen-transfer Jana Klassen is settling into her first full season with CMU and her first season with the Blazers in the back row where she wears the libero's opposite coloured shirt. Klassen recorded a stellar 17 digs in Saturday's win, and will be counted on again this weekend to keep rallies alive for her rotation against a Rouges team that is known for their scrappy defensive game.

Women's Volleyball takes the court at USB on Friday night at 6:00 pm and 24 hours later will be back for home action at the Loewen against Les Rouges.
