Undefeated Blazers Face Biggest Test Yet
For those looking at the Blazers' Game Day handout for the first time this year, they may not recognize many of the names on the roster. But there is one thing they will already be familiar with; wins.
Women's Basketball has started the season with an unprecedented 10 wins and 0 losses. Something the CMU campus-community has become accustomed to after the Blazer’s Manitoba College Athletic Conference Championship last year. But for a team with only four returning players, it has been the inspired efforts from the 10 CMU rookies that have kept the Blazer's winning ways alive.
Those winning ways face their biggest threat this weekend as the CMU Blazers prepare for two games against the second-place Providence Pilots.
Lone third-year and co-captain Jessica Marx-Houndle recognizes the threat that Providence poses, while also looking forward to the challenge that they bring. “They are pretty quick” she said, “I’m excited, I think it’s going to be a good matchup.”
The Blazers will be further tested this weekend as they continue to face the remainder of the season without second-year forward and both team and conference scoring-leader, Julia Schatkowsky. The 6'1 dynamo suffered an arm injury against the Trinity Lions two weeks ago, finding herself on the injured reserve for the rest of the year.
Marx-Houndle recognized her as having a fantastic second season and believed she may have been the team’s best player. She also knows that this injury brings more pressure on her shoulders and calls the other veterans, along with the rest of the team to step up and fill the whole.
Meanwhile, the Pilots are fresh off their only loss of the season and will be looking to deal the Blazers their first loss Friday night in Otterburne's Jubilee gymnasium. They will be led by second-year forward and most recent MCAC Female Athlete of the Week, Hannah Van Schie.
After travelling to Providence on Friday, the Blazers return home to the Loewen Saturday evening for the Bell Let’s Talk feature matchup. Game starts at 6 pm with the men to follow at 8 pm.
