Riley Ens: January's Lionheart Sports Male Athlete Of The Month

Congratulations to Riley Ens of Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month for January. Riley helped CMU to a record of 4-4 during the month, that included two crucial NIAC wins over the Trinity Lions and Providence Pilots, helping establish the Blazers among the conference's top four in the NIAC standings.

The sophomore forward averaged 14.4 points per game during the month and has found ways to score for the Blazers from inside the paint and from the perimeter. Ens' January highlights included 23 points and 16 rebounds in January 11th's home court win against the Trinity Lions. The following weekend, the Carman Collegiate-grad dropped 20 more in an away loss to the defending NIAC Men's Basketball Champions, Leech Lakers in Minnesota.

Ens saved his best performances of January for the final weekend, scoring a career-high 29 points with 13 rebounds and 6 steals in win in Otterburne over the Providence Pilots on January 25th and got the call from his coach to have the ball in his hands during the final seconds the following night as the Blazers topped the Pilots 80-74 in the Loewen. Ens would finish the game with 19 points, 12 rebounds and a blocked shot.

"Since Christmas, Riley's game has found another level and that has coincided with our team's improving record," said Men's Basketball head coach Billy Isaac. "During this time Riley has led us in points and rebounds, deflections and steals. He has been a big part of our progress this season as we are finding our game as a team at the right time of the season."

Men's Basketball is in their final weekend of home NIAC action of the 2018-19 season in the Loewen Athletic Centre this weekend when they host the 9-0 Sisseton Wahpeton College Mustangs on Friday at 7:00pm and Saturday at noon. On February 8-9, CMU Athletics hosts the 2018 MCAC Basketball Championships. Ens and the Blazers enter the provincial college championships as the #2 ranked team and will tip off on February 8th against the #3 ranked Providence Pilots in the Men's Semifinal.
