Matt Sawatzky: February Lionheart Sports Male Athlete Of The Month

Congratulations to Matt Sawatzky of Men's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month for February. A picture of consistency at middle, the rookie was at it again this month leading CMU to a strong finish to the 2018-19 MCAC regular season with a conference-best record of 15-1 and a run of victories that unfortunately ended in a Championships defeat in last weekend's MCAC Men's Volleyball Championship Final.

The former Miles Mac Buckeye led his team in kill efficiency in every match this month, highlighted with his 57.2% attack percentage on February 9th in a straight sets away win over the USB Rouges. In the match, the 6'5 middle recorded 5 blocks and a service ace to add to his 4 of 7 kill to attempt statistics. Earlier in the month, Sawatzky scored 6 kills on 9 attempts with a service ace and 4 solo blocks in a 3-1 win over Providence.

"Matt not only brings great deal of experience to our team, having played at a top-notch 4A program at Miles Mac and the Winman club program, but a maturity and character that definitely contributes to positive team chemistry," said CMU head coach Don Dulder. "Players look up to Mtt with a great deal of respect. He is an excellent blocker and attacker who really enjoys playing the game - a leader on and off the court."

In Sunday's Championship Men's Final, Matt had another stellar performance, scoring kills on 7 of 11 attempts and adding 4 solo and 4 assisted blocks and 2 service aces.
