Isaac Steps Down As Men's Basketball Head Coach After Six Seasons

After six seasons at the helm of the Men's Basketball program at CMU, Billy Isaac has made a decision to step away from his position as Head Coach of the MCAC and NIAC program. Isaac led the Blazers to a record of 6-8 in 2018-19, good for fourth-place in the nine team NIAC Men's Basketball Division.

"It has been a privilege to coach at CMU," said Isaac. "But I think it's time for a change."

Isaac and long-time assistant coach Dan Neufeld's greatest success with the program came in 2016-17 when the Blazers upset the Red River Rebels in the MCAC Championships, ending a drought of 9 seasons without a Conference Championship Banner while at the same time, ending the Rebels 8-year Championship winning streak. For this accomplishment, Isaac was selected the 2017 MCAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year.

"I really appreciate Coach Isaac's and Coach Neufeld's dedication to this program," commented Athletics Director, Russell Willms, "During their six seasons they have had some significant success stories, both on the court and off of it. We wish both of them the best of luck in their future coaching endeavours and are thankful for their time here."

CMU joined the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2016 as the first MCAC program to join the US organization in Minnesota and the Dakotas. In 2017, fellow MCAC members Red River College and Providence University College followed suit, bringing membership in the NIAC to ten teams and injecting a distinct Canadian-flavour to the cross-border league.

Isaac led the Blazers to a semifinal berth in 2017, bowing out to the eventual champion Leech Lake Lakers. This season CMU fell to the AFBLS Conquerors in the 2019 quarters.

A posting for the Men's Basketball Head Coaching vacancy will appear early next week on both the CMU job postings, the Basketball Manitoba website as well as the MCAC website.
