Dynamic Sturgeon Heights Defender Welcomed To 2019-20 CMU Roster

CMU Women's Basketball is very pleased to announce the commitment of Sturgeon Heights guard Kylie Karr for the 2019-20 NIAC and MCAC seasons. A self-proclaimed "late-bloomer", Karr didn't even pick up a basketball competitively in high school until Grade 9, but once she did the multi-sport athlete's trajectory has taken her and her Huskies team to new heights for the program.

Earlier this month, the Huskies took their 2019 season all the way to the MHSAA 'AAAA' Girls Provincial Final; one step further than Sturgeon Heights' 2018 journey that ended in the Provincial Championship Semis.

"Kylie has displayed the most rapid improvement of any player that I've coached in a number of years," said Karr's high school head coach Evan Cox. "She grew from a solid defender to a dynamic transition-player and dangerous outside shooter and now is one of the top ball-defenders in all of Manitoba."

In her Grade 12 season Karr averaged 12 points, 2 three-point field goals made per game and showcased her defensive abilities by adding 2 steals. She also was recognized with numberous Player of the Game selections in her final season of High School Basketball including the Pembina Trails, Sisler and St. Vital Tournaments.

"I believe Kylie will bring elite athleticism and an intense, competitive fire to the CMU squad," added Cox. "I am excited to see Kylie continue to develop in the coming years."

That high level of defending and transition play has Blazers' Head Coach Joe Di Curzio very excited about his most recent recruit. "Kyle is undoubtedly one of the top three defenders in High School Basketball this year," he said. "She will bring incredible intensity at practices to make us better and she will make it extremely difficult for opponents to score against us. Kylie guarded all the top players in High School last season and was extremely successful. We are really looking forward to that plus her ability to attack the basket and shoot the three-pointer."
