Pagé and Snider Soar Into World Ultimate Disc Championships With Team Canada
Count on Matthew Pagé to be all in for the start of the 2019-20 CMU Men's Volleyball season, but before that time arrives, the second-year leftside is in the final days of preparation for the upcoming World Under-24 Ultimate Championships in Heidelberg, Germany where he will shed his kneepads and lace up his cleats as a member of Team Canada. Joining the fresh-faced Pagé is an accomplished veteran of the National Team program, Quinn Snider. Still a CMU student, Snider has put aside his volleyball training entirely in pursuit of Ultimate, where he recently linked on as a professional, catching discs and scoring goals south of the border.
Both players got their introduction to the fast-growing sport as high school students at Winnipeg's Westgate Mennonite Collegiate where Ultimate has a popularity-level equalled only by the sport's name. "I've been playing (Ultimate) now for 9 years after starting in the sport at Westgate in Grade 8," said Pagé who's greatest accomplishment prior to being selected to Team Canada came last summer when the then 20-year old won the Canadian National Championship in the mixed division as a member of Winnipeg's PBHG.
Pagé's selection process started with an online application and moved to an open tryout earlier this year in Winnipeg while other regional selection camps took place in Toronto and Vancouver. When the World Championships launch on July 13th, Pagé expects to contribute to the Canadian squad as an Offensive Line Cutter, where he can showcase his volleyball jumping ability to win sky battles with his elite verticle leap.
Team Canada teammate, Quinn Snider is well-versed in international-level of Ultimate. Snider first represented Canada in 2016 at the Under-20s in Poland and will be competing in his third World Championships this summer in Heidelberg. Of the twenty-five countries that will be represented in Germany this July, Snider believes that the USA will pose the biggest obstacle separating Canada from a World Championship Title with both the population of the country and the development of the sport to be credited for the Americans being the tournament's top-seed.
Snider has recently spent alot of time in the US, playing professionally for the Minnesota Wind Chill in the Midwest Division in the relatively new American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). A rookie with his team, Snider has already become an offensive leader for the Wind Chill by scoring 18 goals and 4 assists over his first 3 games played, placing him with the team's third-highest offensive total. The 20-year old set a Wind Chill record for goals scored in a game when he caught 10 in a critical Week 9 one-goal victory over his team's rivals from Chicago.
Snider played one season on the court for the Blazers, helping Men's Volleyball to an MCAC Championship win in 2017 playing as an outside hitter. The World Championships wrap up in Germany on July 20th.
