Grand Rapids' Mitchell Signs Letter Of Intent To Join Women's Volleyball

One day after the Team Manitoba roster for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax (K'jipuktuk in Mi'kmaq) was publicly announced, the CMU Women's Volleyball program has introduced Tammy Mitchell of Grand Rapids First Nation into the Blazers' squad assembled to challenge for the 2020 MCAC Championship banner.

Mitchell's head coach for both teams, Jayme Menzies, is excited to have Mitchell as a part of her teams this year and had this to say about the Grand Rapids Wolverines star; "Tammy's desire to be in the gym and play! play! play! is unrivaled," said the new Blazers' head coach who helped introduce the MCAC to Mitchell. "That pure love of the game is an essential ingredient to any successful team. I am excited to put in some work with Tammy as I believe we have only began to see the depths of her athleticism."

That elite athleticism was on display at the 2019 Manitoba High School Provincial Badminton Championships in Thompson where Mitchell advanced all the way to the varsity girls singles final, winning a silver medal in a sport she has only been competing in since grade 9. On the volleyball court, the 5'8 left side played a key role for newly-formed Agoojin club team last winter, also coached by Menzies.

As a member of Team Manitoba for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games, Mitchell and her teammates will train throughout the remainder of 2019 and 2020, leading up to July 12-19 when over 800 indigenous nations will gather in Halifax, participating in 15 sports over 8 days to compete.

The MCAC released their regular season schedule for Women's Volleyball on Thursday for 2019-20 with the first match for the Blazers coming on Wedneday, October 30th on home court at the Loewen Athletic Centre versus the Providence Pilots. CMU will begin their preseason in Vancouver, competing in the 2019 Douglas College tournament against the host Royals along with CCAA powerhouse and the defending 2019 National Champions, VIU Mariners.
