2019-20 NIAC Women's Basketball Regular Season Released

The Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in conjunction with the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference, released the 2019-20 NIAC regular season schedules for the three Manitoba members of the American-Midwest conference on Monday afternoon as the Blazers embark on a new campaign with the intent of defending their 2019 provincial championship and shooting for a second banner south of the border. Their sights now firmly set on bringing MCAC basketball into the conference's Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association membership, CMU will continue to put their competitive level to the test against CCAA teams north of the border in new season, with a western road trip into Wild Rose Country this preseason.

NOTEABLE DATES

October 6th

After beginning their 2019-20 preseason with two tough ACAC matchups against the St. Mary's Lightning and Ambrose Lions, CMU will make the short trip 90 kilometers north of Calgary for an encounter with the prolific Olds Broncos; winners of the 2019 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championships last March. Last season, CMU travelled to Vancouver for preseason action in the PacWest Conference, upsetting the defending BC's Champion Capilano Blues despite losses to the Langara Falcons and Douglas Royals. Staying close or perhaps knocking off the National Champions would be a real feather in the Blazers' caps.

January 10th

The second half of the NIAC season starts off with a bang when CMU host their Route 90 rivals from Red River Colleges. A season of rebuilding in 2018-19 saw the MCAC's winningest Women's Basketball program get off to a very rocky start, but by February the young Rebels were back to their competitive selves with sights set on a conference banner. After closing out November with the first of their two meetings in the 2019-20 season, the rubber match in the Loewen Athletic Centre is definitely the game to circle in the schedule.

February 1st

Predictably, the final game to set an alarm for in the new NIAC season is second half of an away and home weekend with the defending NIAC Women's Basketball Champions and a team who looks to still be ascending, the Providence Pilots. CMU took an upper hand on the Pilots in the 2019 MCAC Championships, forcing Providence to settle for runner-up status and when both teams headed south for the 2019 NIAC Championships, an injury-riddled CMU roster would be eliminated from the 8-team competition before the two powerhouses could renew acquaintances.

TIP-OFF TIMES

Unlike the other MCAC sports, the 2019-20 season for Women's Basketball will practice traditional gendered start times with women's action starting the competitions for both evenings and matinees.
