Pay Back Is Sweet For Blazers Who Top Providence 3-0 For First Win

With the 2019 MCAC Men's Volleyball Championship Final still fresh in the mind of the Blazers, CMU evened things up with the Providence Pilots on Wednesday night, soundly defeating the now defending champions in straight sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21.

The Blazers showed their prowess at the net in the opening set led by four-year middle Jack Tyrrell. The former Linden Christian Wing counted two momentum-changing solo blocks and wowed the full house in the Loewen Athletic Centre midway through the opening set with a series of consecutive blocks – a one-handed soft-block followed immediately by a second soft-block – that unfortunately saw the ensuing CMU attack get caught in the net. Tyrrell helped his team's cause from the service line too, scoring 2 aces, all part of a 25-16 set win and a 1-0 advantage in the best of five home opener.

Carter Hofer shone in the second set where the third-year left side scored 5 of his game-high 10 kills and amassed a kill efficiency of 52%. CMU's confidence showed both offensively and defensively, frustrating the Pilots and taking the visitors competely out of the match. After numerous service and attack errors, the Pilots chose to mix up their rotation in the third set, slipping starting left-side Jonas Friesen into the libero's shirt and making starting libero Pierce Dresser into a setter.

Despite the Pilots' effort to mix up their rotation, the points continued to be piled against the visitors. Rookie CMU setter Cameron Chan seized his opportunity to run the Blazers offense and showed his competency to do so, orchestrating the straight sets home win and clearly gaining the confidence of his teammates.

There is little rest for the Blazers before they engage with USB on Friday night in St-Boniface as the Rouges host CMU in their 2019-20 MCAC home opener. The Rouges introduce a new head coach and a new look rotation on Friday night and will be a team that will be difficult for CMU to prepare for.
