Cougars No Match For Hofer-led Blazers As CMU Improves to 6-0

Carter Hofer pounded 19 kills over three sets on Saturday afternoon as CMU scored another impressive home court win, 3-0 over the Assiniboine Cougars. Coming off a dominant performance of 10 kills in Friday's win over their Brandon-based opponents, the 6'3 left side was an even stronger force in the front row, leading CMU to their 6th consecutive conference regular season win in three sets; 25-21. 26-24, 25-16.

Cameron Chan had yet another strong outing filling in at the setter position for injured starter Tim Juvonen. The rookie product of Winnipeg's 204 volleyball club recorded 37 of CMU's 44 assists and served for the final point of the first set. Hofer scored the set-winning kill to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

A tight second set turned out in favour of the Blazers. Trailing 23-20, a Cougars' timeout sparked the visitors to three-consecutive points before rookie opposite Josh Werbiski's kill produced a sideout, giving CMU the opportunity to serve for the set. After Hofer tipped to score from the pipe, Jack Tyrrell had a chance to serve for a commanding 2-0 lead, and though the Cougars returned the fourth-year middle's floater, their attack attempt was driven out the back. The set ended 26-24 for the hosts.

Second-year left side Brock Carmichael shone in the third set after the former Vincent Massey Viking entered for Cam Gayleard. The Blazers continued to sizzle with Carmichael scoring points from 5 kills in the set, leading CMU to a 25-15 win and their sixth consecutive straight-sets victory as the Blazers open the 2019-20 Manitoba Colleges men's volleyball regular season on a run of 18 sets-won with no defeats.

Men's Volleyball returns to action next weekend in a home and home series with the USB Rouges. Saturday's home match will mark the final home match of the Fall Semester for the Blazers. First serve is scheduled for 6:00pm.
