Apiyo’s Record-Setting Return Raises Blazers Over Rebels

Shirliz Apiyo scored 21 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dropped in a program record, 11 assists on Friday night as CMU topped the Red River Rebels 75-52 in front of a full house in the Loewen Athletic Centre. The win vaulted the Blazers past their Winnipeg-based rivals and into a tie for first place in the eight team NIAC standings, with a record of 6-1.

Tied 28-28 with three minutes left in the first half, the home team took hold of momentum after Jessica Marx-Houndle swished a corner-three to start a 10-0 run leading to the halftime buzzer. The fourth-year guard would finish with 12 points after shooting 5 of 8 from the field and recovered 8 rebounds in the win. CMU lead 38-28 at the half.

Julia Schatkowsky scored her game-high 26th and 27th points of the game in the fourth quarter coming from Apiyo's record-setting 11th assist. The basket opened up a 25-point lead for the Blazers – their largest of the game. The 27-point night for Schatkowsky was complimented by 9 rebounds and 4 steals and solidified the third-year forward at the top of the conference's offensive leaderboard with an average of 20.5 points per game.

CMU completed their weekend sweep on Saturday afternoon, when they avenged an early season away loss in exhibition action to the Dakota College at Bottineau Jacks, with a strong defensive effort on home court, edging the US National Junior College rivals, 46-41. In Bottineau on November 15th, it was the hosts who exploded offensively with an 86-50 win. In Saturday's win, Schatkowsky would again lead the offence with 13 points while adding a career-high 15 rebounds for the victors.

CMU receives a much needed rest this weekend before departing January 25th for New Town, North Dakota for their first ever meeting with NIAC newcomers, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish Storm on Saturday and Sunday. NHSC are currently in the basement of the NIAC women's basketball standings with a record of 0-4.
