CMU Athletics is very happy to announce the commitment of Carberry Collegiate's Rachel Penner for the 2020-21 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season. The versatile 5'10 multi-sport athlete has starred on her high school's varsity team since Grade 9 at the setter position while playing mostly right side for her club team, Cats Volleyball Club in Brandon.

As team captain, Penner led the Cougars to their first zone championship banner and first provincial berth in her senior year and after being named her team's Player of the Game in two of their provincial championship matches, was selected to the 2019 Manitoba High School Graduating All-Star Team.

Penner's accolades don't stop on the volleyball court, she also plays first base for her high school's softball team and stars on Team Manitoba in Track & Field where she represented the province in javelin and discuss at the 2019 Western Canada Games. For all her contributions to sport at Carberry Collegiate, Penner has been recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year at her high school in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

"Rachel is a strong, multi-sport athlete who brings a powerful serve, attack and great hands with her," said CMU head coach Jayme Menzies. "Her versatile skill set will allow her to quickly create opportunities for herself and, beyond that, she is an endlessly supportive teammate and very congenial person. Her positive impact will be immediately felt."

CMU is in home action this weekend, hosting a rubber match with the top-ranked USB Rouges who were handed their first loss of the season last weekend in St-Boniface by the Blazers. Action gets underway at 7:30pm on Saturday night. Then on Sunday, the Blazers host a rare matinee when the Red River Rebels visit the Loewen Athletic Centre at 3:30pm.
