NIAC Championship Seeds Set: CMU Faces Red River In Winnipeg

After some delay calculating results from the final weekend of the regular season the 2020 NIAC Basketball Championship bracket has now been confirmed and will begin with an historic matchup that slates two MCAC rivals against each other as Red River host CMU for a Wednesday night in the first-ever NIAC Championship game happening in Canada.

"This conversation came up in our September meeting at the request of Red River College that should two Manitoba teams find themselves in a quarterfinal match-up, that single-elimination contest could happen north of the border with the winner advancing to join the semifinalists at the host site of the Championships," explained Athletics Director Russell Willms.

Both the Blazers and Rebels were glued to their sets last weekend, awaiting the results of the Sisseton Wahpeton versus Turtle Mountain matchup and the Free Lutheran versus Trinity Bible games that would ultimately decided the final seedings for the NIAC quarterfinals. The Mustangs entered the weekend tied with Red River, undefeated at 12-0 and forcing the possibility of a complicated tie-break for the conference to determine the top seed. However, the Mikininocks simplified everything on Saturday, topping Sisseton Wahpeton 104-101 on home court to leave the defending champions at 13-1, half a game back of the Rebels who finished 13-0, after Red River had a trip to Belcourt postponed by weather and were unable to find a date between themselves and Turtle Mountain that allowed the game to be made up before the regular season ended.

Despite losing both games to the Conquerors, Trinity Bible passed the Blazers for seventh spot after the Oak Hills Wolfpack were unable to field a team for their final regular season game against the Lions. Though not the way the league would like to see the regular season finish, the result of the win lifted Trinity one spot above CMU in the final standings.

Today, the conference announced that CMU will play the Red River Rebels on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm at Red River College's North Gym with the winner advancing to Saturday afternoon's semifinal against the winner of #4 Free Lutheran versus #5 Leech Lakers. The Lakers are playing host the the 2020 Championship in Cass Lake, Minnesota.
