Familiar Face Chooses CMU As Her Home For 2020-21 MCAC Season

CMU Athletics is pleased to announce the commitment of Oak Park Collegiate's Delaney Gerwing for the 2020-21 MCAC Women's Volleyball season. Gerwing and head coach Jayme Menzies need no introduction. The two combined for two high school season at Oak Park for Gerwing's Grade 10 and 11 campaigns.

"I had the pleasure of coaching Delaney for two years during high school so I can confidently vouch for her versatility, efficient execution and composure on the court," said the Blazer's head coach who currently has her team on a roll, winners of their last 10 matches. "Delaney strikes the tricky but ideal balance between relaxed and competitive. She will be a great fit for our team next season and I am happy to be back working with her."

The 5'10 middle helped the Raiders to a very strong 2019 Manitoba high school season that included a tournament win in Brandon at Vincent Massey High School. Oak Park recorded WWAC Tier 1 playoff wins against St. Mary's Academy and Westwood Collegiate before falling to Portage's PCI Saints in four sets in their zone final. Gerwing and the Raiders would move on to the 2019 'AAAA' provincial championship as the #5 ranked program, advancing all the way to the semfinals with victories over J.H. Bruns and Lord Selkirk to begin the tournament before succumbing to 2019 banner-winners, Dakota.

A final accolade for Gerwing's high school volleyball career came in the form of an MHSAA 'AAAA' Graduating All-star selection in December.

CMU enter their final regular season match tonight at Red River College against the 3-16 Rebels. The Blazers have been rapidly climbing the MCAC women's volleyball standings in the second half of the schedule after a shaky start that had CMU sitting fourth at the holiday break with a record of 3-6. Now, winners of ten consecutive matches, the Blazers have risen to second and are the only team in the MCAC to have successfully defeated the USB Rouges who sit atop the women's volleyball standings with a record of 17-2.

The 2020 MCAC Volleyball Championships will take place at Canadian Mennonite University's Loewen Athletic Centre, February 29th and March 1st.
