Men's Soccer Introduces Experienced Midfielder From Belize

With roots stemming from Central America and nearby Steinbach, Sherwin Thiessen recently signed his letter of intent to join the CMU Men's Soccer program for MCAC play in 2020-21.

"I have had the opportunity of playing with Sherwin before and I can say with confidence that he is a great fit for our Blazers' squad," said CMU head coach Anderson Pereira who enters his third season this fall. "He is a quality player with a lot of heart and love for the game."

Pereira first became aquainted with Thiessen through the Southeast Futsal League based in Steinbach; a league that boasts talent from all around the region and regularly sees players from Winnipeg commiting to the one-hour commute to play. The two joined forces on SFL league-side En Feugo, a roster with a large contingency of former MCAC players, giving both Thiessen and Pereira the confidence that the graduate of Belize Christian Academy can make a immediate impact when the 2020 season kicks off.

Though Thiessen feels that his best position is in central midfield, Pereira points to Thiessen as the kind of player that can adjust to any role in the field. "He is a very versatile player and with his experience combined with his skill set, he will play an important role this season and contribute to further success for this program."

At age 23, and already holding his first undergraduate degree from Steinbach Bible College, Thiessen brings immediate leadership and poise to a CMU program that have proven to be yearly contenders for an MCAC trophy and expects to return a veteran-laden lineup.

Added to his 4 years of playing experience in the Southeast Futsal League, Thiessen has also used the platform to experience life as a coach. While a student and player with SBC, Thiessen took leadership of the Flames women's futsal team.

CMU is scheduled to begin preseason competition in Hamilton this September as part of their membership requirements in the CCAA. On September 4th, the Blazers meet the OCAA's Redeemer Royals and on September 5th they tackle the Mohawk Mountaineers (both matches are subject to the lifting of current travel restrictions related to COVID-19). The MCAC regular season schedule begins September 12th.
