Winkler Defender Steps Into 2020 Men's Soccer Lineup

Just days after the Manitoba Soccer Association broke news of a return to play date, CMU Men's Soccer head coach, Anderson Pereira announced the commitment of former Garden Valley Collegiate defender, Aaron Doerksen. Primarily positioned as a central defender, Doerksen helped his Winkler, Manitoba high school to a zone championship in 2018 before bowing out in the rural high school provincial finals to rivals, Steinbach Regional.

On top of this play with the Zodiacs, the fullback developed through the youth ranks with the Winkler Wild before moving into the senior level with the Winkler Riot in 2019 competing in the Manitoba Major Soccer League's fifth division.

"Due to the pandemic restrictions, I have not actually had an opportunity to see Aaron play yet, but I have been told many good things about his abilities and I am confident from my sources that he is a great addition to the team," said Pereira, who returns for his third season in 2020. "Even in our brief meeting, it was evident that Aaron has great leadership qualities and I am sure that he is going to fit in well with our team and play a big part in our roster, even as a first-year player."

Lots of decisions will be made at both the individual level for CMU Athletics and the provincial level with the MCAC in the coming weeks, after the recent announcement of June 12th marking the start of the MSA's Phase 1 of their Return to Play breaking last week, there is ample reason to be hopeful that conference play will get underway this September and likely on time.

One part of the CMU preseason that appears to be all but extinguished is the preseason CCAA friendlies scheduled to take place in Hamilton against Ontario's Redeemer Royals and Mohawk Mountaineers. On Monday, the OCAA announced the complete cancellation of all Fall semester sports, including Men's and Women's Soccer.

The highlight event of the MCAC Men's and Women's Soccer season is scheduled to be played in western Manitoba for the first time in 2020 when Brandon University hosts the Final Fours on October 31st and November 1st.
