Glenlawn Captain Confirms Commitment to CMU in Women's Volleyball

CMU head coach Jayme Menzies has assembled a strong structure for her 2020-21 roster and annouced a new addition recently just as plans emerge from Manitoba Volleyball and the MCAC for a return to play. The newest Blazer, Annika Kornelsen is an athletic 5'8 outside hitter from Winnipeg's Glenlawn Collegiate.

Playing mostly left-side, the Lions captain helped Glenlawn to a third-place finish in the SCAC in her senior year and along with another recent CMU signing Faith Ridd, honed her skills with the newly formed Bandits Volleyball club this winter after spending previous seasons with Pirates Volleyball.

"Annika's ability to play any position on the floor along with her energy and work ethic will add great depth to our team," said Menzies who will be entering her second season this Fall. "I look forward to seeing the various roles she will chisel for herself."

Evidence of that athleticism comes in the form of the sport interests Kornelsen has involved herself with. The winner of Glenlawn's Junior Varsity Female Athlete of the Year in Grade 10, Kornelsen has competed on the track in long jump, high jump and triple jump and also on the soccer field. On top of that, she has competed on the mat at the Winnipeg Gymnastic Centre and in recent years has taken up coaching the sport.

This week, CMU administration approved plans for returns to participation of soccer, volleyball and basketball teams under the protocols recommended by each sport's Provincial Sport Organization and approved by the Manitoba Health Authority. In short, the return of sanctioned soccer training in Manitoba is now in Phase 2 and plans are in place to enter 11 a-side competitions shortly. Though Volleyball and Basketball have announced plans, indoor sports are yet to clear dates for training to resume.

The MCAC has not made a formal announcement with regard to volleyball yet this spring, but plans are underway for an announcement soon and the conference is working on ways to safely conduct a 2020-21 schedule under the framework provided by the CCAA.
