Men’s Volleyball Jumps To Saskatchewan To Sign Martens

Markus Martens is eager to get back on the court. After missing his senior season of high school volleyball to the nationwide pandemic restrictions, the athletic leaper has signed his letter of intent to join the CMU Blazers for the 2021-22 MCAC season.

Don Dulder has high hopes for the middle attacker; "We have graduated a few of the middles that have been with our program for quite a few years, both last year and coming up this spring," said the veteran CMU head coach. "Markus has the athleticism and talent to contribute in a big way and could step right into our regular rotation next season."

Martens helped Rosetown Central High to their first provincial championship berth in 20 years as a grade 11 player in 2019 at the 'AAA' level after earning Most Valuable Player honours in his grade 10 season.

"Markus is a good all-around athlete who is intelligent and will quickly adapt to things here," said Dulder. "He has a high contact point and hits the ball decently hard. He's a competitive guy. He moves very well and with a bit of training and exposure to the college-level, I think he can be an extremely good middle."

One doesn't have to look far for evidence of Martens' natural athleticism. Instead of competing in the club scene, the 6'3 talent opted to compete in ice hockey, baseball, badminton and track and field away from the high school volleyball court. In 2019, Martens took home gold in triple jump and bronze in long jump at the Provincial Track and Field Championships and contributed to a Tier 5 Saskatchewan Championship on the ball diamond.

"Markus has a lot of athletic tools and a tremendous amount of potential," summarized Dulder.

The Blazers hope to return to regular training in mid-January if the pandemic restrictions governing volleyball are softened by the province of Manitoba. Volleyball, along with all competitive team sports, has been halted in the region since early in November as the province saw a sharp spike in positive cases of the coronavirus.

The 2021-22 season marks a significant milestone for CMU and the MCAC in general as the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association welcomes Manitoba to their first National Championships berth in 2022. The championship of Men's Volleyball is slated to be hosted in Quebec City in March 2022.
