Volleyball Recruit Brings Club and School Success To New Challenge At CMU

Things continue to look up for the CMU women's volleyball program as the defending MCAC champions have turned their focus towards the 2021-22 campain. This week they announced another addition to the squad that will look to represent Manitoba at the 2022 CCAA National Championships, in Oak Park High School's, Sahra McKenzie.

Blessed with a strong mind for the game and athleticism to contribute in many ways on the court, McKenzie has seen her fair share of volleyball success while at her west-Winnipeg high school despite missing her senior season to pandemic restrictions. The 5'8 right-side helped the Raiders to a WWAC Division championship in 2018 while a Grade 10 student and despite a defeat in the WWAC Championship the following season, the Raiders would win the difficult Viking Classic tournament at Brandon's Vincent Massey and advance to the Manitoba High School 'AAAA' Provincial Championships advancing to the round of four before bowing out to the undefeated Dakota Lancers.

"Sahra has been a go-to player on all the teams she has played for," said CMU head coach Jayme Menzies. "I enjoy watching the ease with which she moves both on the floor and in the air, and I know her teammates will enjoy the humour and positivity she brings to a space."

After beginning in the club circuit with Junior Bisons, McKenzie shifted to play with Shock volleyball club and helped the program earn a provincial gold medal in 2018. She would win a second provincial championship with Cobras in 2019 and silver medals at the "Best of the West" tournament in Calgary that same season. In 2020, Cobras placed strongly at Nationals winning gold in Tier 1 – Division 2.

The 2021-22 MCAC season marks the first opportunity that Manitoba's MCAC programs will take a run at the CCAA National Championships since the nation-wide association for college sports in Canada recognized the MCAC with membership in 2018. The Manitoba winners will join existing CCAA regional conferences – PacWest (BC), ACAC (Alberta-Sask), OCAA (Ontario), RSEQ (Quebec) and ACAA (Atlantic) in competition at the 2022 Women's Volleyball National Championships in Halifax next March.
