It’s A ‘Family-First’ Decision For New Men’s Volleyball Signing

When Luke Janzen steps on the volleyball court next fall he will by joining many familiar faces in the 2021 recruiting class from his days as a high school and club volleyball player while also keeping a bit of a family legacy going at CMU.

A versatile 6'0 left-side who was selected Male Athlete of the Year by his Winnipeg high school, Linden Christian in 2019 and 2020, Janzen helped the Wings to a 'AAAA' Junior Varsity provincial berth and a bronze-medal finish in 2018.

"Luke will be a wonderful addition to our team," said CMU head coach Don Dulder. "Because of his excellent hands and good passing ability, on top of being a strong attacker, he can play as a libero as well as a left side. He is a very athletic and versatile player and I am really interested to see what he is capable of at the next level."

Luke has strong ties to CMU. Oldest brother Jacob played as a setter with the Blazers from 2015 to 2018 while brother Zach currently represents the University of Manitoba program and has visited the Loewen Athletic Centre at CMU on occasion for preseason exhibition matches with the Bisons.

"I have coached Luke's brother and know Luke's dad well and I can say that we are adding a quality young man to the program from a great family," added Dulder.

On the club scene, Janzen has enjoyed a successful run with the Winman volleyball program since beginning as a 13u player. Janzen as part of a provincial championship with the Winman 15u's and won gold at the 16u Canadian National Club Championships in Tier 3.

"I am excited to play with a great group of guys at CMU. That was the deciding factor for me as I know many of the players who have already signed with CMU this year and I am really looking forward to the time that I will spend with them," said Janzen. "The atmosphere at MCAC games in fantastic as well and with my Grade 12 season being cancelled, I am really looking forward to another year of volleyball."

The 2021-22 season marks the first season for CMU and the MCAC as full members in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The affiliation means a path will open for the Manitoba winners to compete for a CCAA National Championship beginning for the sport of Men's Volleyball in March 2022. The 2022 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championships are scheduled to be hosted in Quebec City.
